Prayers of the People
July 4, 1999

God of All, we'd all be a lot more use and do a lot less harm, if we had rest in our souls. Some of us are indeed overworked and heavy burdened. Some of us have reason for being distressed, some of us are just at loose ends, out of sorts, hard to please.

But with no rest for our souls, or our souls lulled to sleep in a false rest, we don't make very good neighbours, or very good citizens either of our community or of the world, nor do we make very good stewards of creation, as we succumb to impossible consumption like everyone else.

Dear God, how we need to learn of you, so that we find rest for our souls, and if it means we have to get going on the meek and lowly bit, so be it. Isn't it strange Lord, that when we pray from our deepest needs, we say, COME Lord, while all along, you're the one that says, COME.

God In Your Mercy...Hear Our Prayer

Gracious God, there are many individual crys being made to you at this time. We lift up each other's prayers. There are the bereaved, those having an anxious time with their health, their families, their work and their loving. As you teach us to bear each other's burdens, use the community such bearing creates as a vessel whereby your healing and reconciling powers reach everyone in need.

God In Your Mercy...Hear Our Prayer

God of Hosts, we pray for the world. What a relief to be able to pray on one important front for those waging peace. We may not be very good at it, we may be stupid and child-like about it, like children quarreling at play, but better to be waging peace, for all its challenge and difficulty, than waging war.

Dear God, hear our prayer for those working at peace making allover the world. Move with your reconciling power on all those fronts where peace initiatives are underway - in the Balkans, Northern Ireland, Israel and Syria, Israel and the Palestinians, Columbian civil war, Sierra Leone, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

And hear our prayers for the lives of the people on those fronts where warfare has been resumed - India and Pakistan, Ethiopia and Eritrea, Somaliland, Angola. Oh, Lord of Hosts, bring peace to these fronts.

God In Your Mercy...Hear Our Prayer

God of All, we close our word with you with a prayer for the forgotten sufferers everywhere, near and far. If we could just get under that burden, we might find out how light your burden is and how easy your yoke.
