M.J. V. (Jack) Shaver

"Jack" Shaver was born in Fort William (Thunder Bay) in 1918. From the age of two to the year before his ordination he lived in the manse next door to Stella Mission, Winnipeg. Stella and Sutherland Missions were part of All People's Mission, first a Methodist, and then a United Church institution in the north end of Winnipeg. J.S. Woodsworth was superintendent at one time. Jack's father was superintendent from 1920 to 1941.

Jack graduated from United College (now the University of Winnipeg) and was ordained by Manitoba Conference in 1942. He married Dorothy Hamlet of Fort William. The Shavers have five children.

For the first 10 years Jack served two rural charges in Manitoba Conference, then seven years at Fort Garry United Church in suburban Winnipeg.

His next placement took the Shavers to Vancouver where Jack served 10 years as the United Church chaplain at the University of British Columbia. Following that he spent three years on the staff of an inter-presbytery urban council.

Jack 's final 10 years in the ministry were spent on the staff of First United Church, a mission institution in downtown Vancouver. Jack retired in 1982 and he and Dorothy are living in Vancouver.
