The Community-based Research Capacity Building Network invites people to join a free webinar titled From Information to Participation: Science Shops as Mediators Between Science and Society. The webinar takes place on May 27, 2013 from 12:30 pm – 1:30 pm (Newfoundland time). Norbert Steinhaus of the Bonn Science Shop will be the guest speaker.

Abstract: Science Shops mediate between citizen groups and research institutions. They are not “shops” in the traditional sense of the word, rather they are small entities that carry out scientific research in a wide range of disciplines on behalf of citizens and local civil society. Science Shops are often, but not always, linked to universities and provide independent, participatory research support in response to concerns experienced by civil society.

This webinar will discuss both best practices and challenges of running Science Shops. Information will be given about the history of Science Shops and how they have found their place on the agenda of science policy-making; working with students in the curriculum; and researchers involvement with civil society organizations.

To register for this free webinar please contact Kim Olson at either kimberlyolson@gov.nl.ca or (709) 694-4747.

The Rural Development Institute is hosting a free webinar on April 1, 2013 from 10:00 am – 12:00 pm CST on a comparison of Australian and Canada sustainable rural community development.

Canadian and Australian rural communities have much in common. They are located in federations similar in structure and function with provinces/states having considerable authority over rural places. Governments are often challenged to provide equitable services to all places, especially in rural communities. Yet these communities continue to survive often facing the most challenging demographic, economic and environmental circumstances. In a comparative research study, Professor John Martin (Centre for Sustainable Regional Communities, La Trobe University), will ask what is it about these places, people and institutions that sustain them over time.

Some rural regions are booming and cannot attract enough workers; others have become commuter stations for large urban centres. While government support for northern and rural economies is in flux, there are emerging lessons for rural and northern Canada, as its communities struggle to shape their future.

Laurentian University is hosting an evening presentation on March 21, 2013 at 7:00 pm EST with keynote speaker Robert Greenwood. Rob will deliver provocative insights on the challenges and practical approaches facing rural and northern communities. He has served in economic development departments in Newfoundland and Labrador and in Saskatchewan as Director and Assistant Deputy Minister of Policy. He led the process to create Regional Economic Development Boards in 20 Economic Zones in Newfoundland and Labrador. Since 2004, he has worked to establish Memorial University’s Leslie Harris Centre of Regional Policy and Development, where he serves as Founding Director.
